DBNY Haul

Discounted Brand Name Yarn (DBNY) is a yarn website that offers box lots, bag lots and cones of yarn at discounted prices, year round. You just can't be too fussy about what is available. There are mystery yarn lots that are even cheaper. If you are a beginner than this is the place for you, those mystery bags are random and lots of fun to receive.

I had to collect this package from the post office as it was too heavy for the mailman. I bought Orange, Green and Black 100% wool yarns, Seafoam 100% cotton yarn, Royal Blue Angora/Silk yarn (!!!), hand-painted orange-red Mohair/Silk yarn and hand-painted multi-colour Silk/Cotton yarn. Big cones of yarn are good for making sweaters and other clothing, you will use up the whole thing.

Tangs Sale

  

Tangs Sale has started with a member's only event on 3 Oct and I woke up early to have breakfast there and Q to enter. The big draw for the crowds were the before noon deals that I had to skip as the crowds were too big to really see anything.

I checked out the newly opened top floor that had this row of vending machines, I bought a Men's skincare pack of samples. The Philosophy machine had hope in a jar moisturizer, hand cream and lip glosses. The Havianas machine was filled with Disney children slippers.

Then I headed over to L1 (women's skincare) to get the new Estee Lauder Blockbuster makeup set at just $108 with min purchase. The lovely gold lacquer cases and shimmery lipsticks with full sized skincare is not to be missed, I think the regular price of the items separately will top over $800.

 It gets even better when Estee Lauder's No. 1 skincare Advanced Night Repair is also being bundled at just $160, that's like buying the night repair serum at regular price and getting 3 half size samples free. All with 12% rebate on your Tangs card. 

 My 2 Estee Lauder purchases allowed me to redeem a $25 Tangs beauty voucher.

Heading over to the Guerlain counter where a little birdie told me the real sales were. Guerlain is giving out a mirror & sample pack with $150 purchase and the new foundation in full size with min $500 purchase. 

The real deals are these value packs in full sizes. The Abeille Royale Serum retails for $249, the value pack costs just $150 and comes with half-sized day cream & lotion. The Super Aqua Serum retails for $269, the value pack costs $249 and comes with a face mask, lotion & eye cream. Same thing for the Super Aqua Eye value pack $130.

Total rebates on my Tangs Card was $100, in addition I also received $75 in vouchers.

4th Oct is the branded watches, sunglasses and jewelry sale at Tangs Vivocity, coincidentally, it's also Children's Day. I didn't buy anything from the special event but I did pick out a pair of Ralph Lauren sunglasses from Sunglass Hut booth in Tangs, 25% discount + 12% rebates, the nice salespeople even threw in a free cleaner kit.

Now to use up my vouchers and rebates, Tangs Vivocity beauty hall features perfume so I picked out some stuff as Christmas presents for guys. Lots of specially priced coffrets, purchase with purchase and even freebies.

Soo exhausted with all that price comparison & product information, takeaway lunch of sushi.

Singer Knitting Machine - Flat

The Singer Knitting machine can also knit flat panels with a flick of the switch. I was really excited to use this function and it works well, except when turning around at the corners. You really have to ensure the hook gets the yarn as it sometimes slips. I also tried it with fuzzy mohair yarn and it kept getting caught, so it is limited to lace, fingering and maybe DK weight yarn in the usual wool/cotton, if you want to work fast.

If you are looking for something better, Addi machines have more weight and precision but cost almost USD$1k.

Chanel Fall/Winter 2013 Fashion

Chanel's pre-Fall showing was an Elizabethan-inspired collection in pouffy short tweed skirts, ruffled collars & sleeves, all very warm yet comfy clothings.

It's Fall/Winter showing is actually more polished and worldly, with patent black or white details and smart-looking reds & blues. Everything's still sparkly though :)

There is also the high-low cutting on the jackets to dresses, where its cut shorter in front and longer on the back. Silhouettes are feminine but not form fitting and swingy, so it'll be lots of fun to wear.

Chanel Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013 is decidedly more light-hearted with pastels and creams dominating. It is also filled with crowd pleasers like the classic 2 piece suits it is famous for and camellia emblazoned dresses. One accessory we can't do without this season is the sparkly slouchy hats, gimme gimme!

All-in-One Appliance

I came across this vintage Electrochef Kitchen Appliance Set that looks like a table but holds all the functions of a kitchen, kinda like the modern day Range Cooker with stoves and oven. I am always intrigued by the idea that you buy just 1 appliance and that basically is your entire kitchen. (This Belling Cook Centre 90E has an integrated backsplash, how nice if there was a cooker hob and overhead lights as well).

And then I was brought back down to earth again when I realize it's the same thing they sell for RVs, hotels and dorm rooms. This Summit 30" combo unit ships in 1 box and runs on 110v.

At home I actually use a hybrid appliance for small get-togethers, this grill plate with steamboat pot. More commonly known as Korean BBQ plate. I am absolutely certain all Singaporeans have one of these. It's soo much easier for your guests to do the cooking and makes planning a party effortless.

Another fun multi-appliance-in-1 are these breakfast contraptions people like to gift newlyweds and new homeowners. You can brew coffee, toast your sandwiches and grill some eggs and sausages all at the same time, too cute.

Or if you are a 1 muffin in the morning kind of person, then this layered device works perfectly as your eggs come out the same size as the muffin and all the other stuff. Basically a stacked hot plate.

If welding several different appliances together isn't your style, there are multi-function appliances these days that chop, beat, whip, grind, knead, mince, grate, juice, blend, heat, stir and steam your foods in 1 place. Sounds too good to be true? Thermomix and Thermochef even have inbuilt scales for you to measure out ingredients.

Originally made for boat/yacht owners, I think this is a great appliance for people who get their grains and spices from source as well, lots of milling and cooking in 1 place.

Poh Heng Jewellery

  

One of the few remaining traditional Gold Smiths in Singapore. Poh Heng is known for its gold jewellery and remains a favourite amongst young brides to get their "si dian jin". It even provides that traditional red box with gold lettering for presentation.

Since it's focus is more on special occasions like weddings, birthdays, newborns, graduation etc, it also carries official Disney and Hello Kitty fine jewellery that comes in presentation boxes.

Tianpo does provide the usual diamonds and gemstones contemporary jewellery. However, tourists or those looking for classic Chinese motifs can find beautiful pieces from Tianpo's regular collection.
