Paper Rice Vietnamese Kitchen

I ordered Pho Tom or Spicy Prawn kway teow soup and its very different. It's a creamy shrimp bisque with Asian ingredients like kway teow inside. Raw veges and herbs were packed separately and I usually appreciate that but it doesn't make a difference here.

Since I didn't order beef pho this time, I ordered the beef salad with banana blossom & starfruit. It's sour but not spicy at all! Everything goes well together here and the starfruit is too cute. I ended up wrapping it in the extra rice paper rolls included in delivery.

Signature grilled spring chicken that is usually seen in bamboo skewers bbq-ing by the road. The smoky bbq flavor on its own is too yummy. The seasoned chicken with dipping salt and sauce is filled with flavor.

Spring roll platter filled with freshly wrapped prawn rolls and deep fried seafood rolls. No nuoc cham or chili! Just 2 types of tamarind sauces, sweet & sour flavor.

Fresh juices guava & pomelo, Viet ice tea and lime soda with that foreign soda water I like!

Saap Saap Thai

 

At first I thought this was a new Korean fried chicken franchise but its actually Thai. It's got plenty of novelty in its bite-sized fried chicken & fried fish as well as the violet pop desserts & drinks. The signature fried batter is soft the way they like it, if you want crispy order the crispy chicken noodles.

I went for the boat noodle kway teow soup, as usual. The chili powder it came with is not basic at all, lots of spices in it. The beef tendon is boiled down to a melt in the mouth texture, don't need to chew at all. Lots of meat in the brisket, sliced beef, meatballs.

I was surprised there is no coffee on the menu, only tea. I ordered viet tea with lime and lemongrass tea, as well as the Violet Soda mixed drinks, really festive. I like the India style non-alcoholic gin & tonic, TDF!

Nagara Thai Gold

Nagara Thai Gold @ City Square Mall. They sell pre-bottled tamarind soft drinks here, first time trying it. Also ordered Thai milk tea that has 2 layers, maybe they pour milk into the tea concentrate.

Once again, its all about the kway teow teng. This broth is very sweet with strong beefy flavor, I think there is sugar added to it. Lots of chopped fried garlic inside as well as fresh herbs & veges normally served raw as a side is cooked into the broth already.

Stuffed chicken wings are delicious, like giant meatballs filled with mushroom, woodear and some other foods. Dessert of candied tapioca with coconut milk needed more coconut milk, other than that it's perfect. The coconut milk curries are obviously not for me.

Viet Mama

This family run eatery along macpherson road has Vietnamese street food like bot loc on its menu. But I just ordered a bahn mi sandwich, pho noodles and fresh summer rolls. The drinks are authentic Vietnamese coffee and tea.

The ingredients in the sandwich and noodles are quite little but still delicious. I really like the summer rolls coz they add meat slices inside in addition to prawns, don't really need the prawns actually, works with just luncheon meat or hams.

Its really about kway teow teng, that's all I am ordering these days when I am not feeling well. Some people say porridge but I much prefer this over porridge. The raw veges & herbs it comes with make a world of difference, wish there was more of it!

Sakura oolong fruit tea and Four Season fruit green tea from Ucha Lavender, comes with real cut fruit inside. There are also some snacks of hotdogs & popcorn chicken.

DIY Fruit Salad

This is usually done with unripe fruits or fruits with little to no flavor. But this time around I am using these Sainsbury frozen cut fruit pouches @ $5 per 500gm is about the same price as fresh uncut fruits.

I am adding in fresh lime, fresh mint and creme fraiche, you can get flavored creme fraiche around Christmas time. Alternatives are canned whipped cream or mascarpone cheese used in tiramisu.

Another combination is Vietnamese chili salt with granulated sugar, this one has lime in it. Pair with tamarind candy for that sweet salty licorice flavor. 

Usually its guava with preserved tangerine peel, sour plum or compressed candy powder. Other types of suitable fresh fruit available here are unripe mango / papaya / kiwi, jambu, jujube.
